It was recorded that 599,146 passengers flew out of Hamilton’s John C. Munro International Airport in 2017. Compare that to 2016 when only 333,368 passengers flew from the same airport. That translates to an 80% growth in passenger traffic in a single year; the most of any airport in Canada.
Air Canada flights into Montreal, Westjet’s expanded service, and low-cost airline Flair are pointed to as the main reasons for the surge. Increased winter flights to warm destinations down south from Air Transat and Sunwing also contributed.
Where Hamilton International truly reigns supreme is overnight express cargo where it remains #1 in the country by volume, with a 13% total volume increase in 2017.
With growth accelerating the way it is, there’s no wonder as to why WestJet’s new ultra-low-cost airline Swoop will begin flying out of Hamilton International this June, increasing passenger traffic to what will surely be another record-breaking year for the airport.

To deal with the surge in traffic, Hamilton International has invested nearly $5,000,000 to upgrade roadways and runways, renovate the duty-free shop and add a new covered, heated international walkway.
