Beginning this June, Catholic schools in Hamilton will raise the Pride flag for the first time in the board’s history.
The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board (HWCDSB) voted 6-3 in favour of the motion recently, in an effort to symbolically express inclusivity for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth in the local Catholic school system.

Following the vote, Hamilton’s Catholic schools will fly the Pride flag outside beginning this June and every June going forward in recognition of Pride Month.
In the past, the HWCDSB has voted against raising the Pride flag at Hamilton’s Catholic schools, citing the Canadian flag and the flag of the cross as the school board’s symbols of inclusivity.
However, Catholic schools have not historically been a safe space for 2SLGBTQIA+ students in general, and the motion represents one small step towards fostering a more accepting culture and environment for queer youth.
“Bullying and exclusion can be major contributors to depression and other mental health disorders amongst 2SLGBTQ+ students,” reads the motion.
“A symbol of acceptance, inclusion, support, and love can be found within flying the Pride Flag.”
