Hamilton’s Crowne Plaza Hotel to be turned into a temporary health facility amid COVID-19

The Crowne Plaza Hotel in Downtown Hamilton is going to be used as a spillover health facility for patients as the city’s hospitals anticipate a potential surge in the COVID-19 pandemic and overwhelming of the healthcare system.

Up to 150 beds will be available for use at this temporary facility, which is intended to support patients who don’t need hospitalization for their treatment and are preparing to transition to community settings such as long-term care facilities.

Funding from the provincial government is making the temporary Crowne Plaza facility possible, and is expected to relieve Hamilton’s hospital networks of around 10 per cent of their acute care capacity.

The facility is expected to open during the week of October 19th and will start with 60 beds with the potential for as many as 150.

As of the most recent report, Hamilton currently has 114 known active cases of COVID-19, bringing the city’s overall total to 1,228 cases since the pandemic began. This overall number also includes 47 deaths, the most recent of which happened just this week.
