With increases in COVID-19 vaccine dose supply, The Ontario government is looking to shorten the extended interval between first and second doses.
As a result, Hamilton public health has said that local healthcare workers in the “high-risk” category now qualify to have their second dose moved to sooner than the current 16 weeks.

This list includes workers in critical care units, emergency and urgent care departments, COVID-19 medical units, Code Blue and rapid response teams, and general internal medicine.
It also includes all patient-facing healthcare workers involved in COVID-19 response including those in specimen collection centres, outbreak response teams, COVID-19 vaccine clinics, mobile testing teams, COVID-19 isolating centres, COVID-19 laboratory services, and current members of Ontario’s Emergency Medical Assistance Team.

By end-of-day on Thursday, May 20th, Hamiltonians who currently qualify for a rescheduled second dose will receive an email or text notification with a new appointment date.
Those who expect to qualify but do not receive a notification can call Hamilton’s COVID-19 hotline at 905-974-9848, option 7, then option 1 starting on Friday, May 21st at 8 am to schedule their second dose appointment.
Originally, as vaccine doses arrived in more limited capacities to Canada, the federal government adopted a prolonged dose schedule for Canadians, expanding the recommended 3 to 4-week window between doses to as much as 16 weeks.
Details on further groups being offered a rescheduled second dose have yet to be announced, and will likely coincide with the confirmation of dose supply.
