Hamilton’s RELAY Coffee is closing one of its locations

Hamilton’s favourite local coffee roaster is sadly saying goodbye to one of its two existing locations.

RELAY Coffee has been a popular spot for coffee, espresso, tea, baked goods, and beyond since launching in Hamilton as Red Hill Coffee back in 2008.

After closing its long-standing stand in the Hamilton Farmers’ Market at the end of 2022, its most prominent existing location is the spacious café on King William Street near James North.

However, it also began operating another location last August in the front café space at the historic Staircase Theatre on Dundurn Street North, bringing RELAY Coffee closer to Hamilton’s west end.

That newest Staircase location, however, will be closing at the end of September according to a message shared to social media by RELAY on Friday afternoon.

“We have loved beautifying and then working in that gorgeous space at the Staircase these past 14 months. We’ve enjoyed getting to know new people through our café and events there and have contributed in a positive way to the Hamilton art community,” wrote the coffee shop.

RELAY cites numerous factors – including inflation, slow economic recovery, and team changes – as reasons for the decision to close. The Staircase Theatre as a venue will remain open, and the café space itself will be taken over by The Staircase’s current leadership.

Locals have until September 30th to visit RELAY Coffee at the Staircase Theatre at 27 Dundurn Street North!
