As some of Ontario’s COVID-19 restrictions begin to relax, the province’s drive-in movie theatres have been given the go-ahead to reopen for public access; including, of course, Hamilton’s own Starlite Drive-In, which has just announced that it will resume screenings this weekend.
The official reopening comes after Starlite Drive-In had earlier announced its plans to open for the season back in March; a decision that was swiftly revoked in the interest of public safety. It was an understandable precaution that nonetheless dismayed many locals.
However, now that the official green light has been given by the province, Starlite Drive-In is choosing to reopen and start screening movies again; albeit, with some key changes in place for the time being.
One of the largest changes is in audience capacity. The drive-in theatre will reduce its intake of guests to allow vehicles to properly distance themselves from each other. Tickets will only be available to buy online in advance, with no in-person sales.
Concessions will also be closed off temporarily, with Starlite keeping its stands shuttered to discourage moviegoers from crowding and disregarding social distancing.
Guests are also asked by Starlite not to leave their vehicles, with the exception of necessary visits to the washrooms. The theatre has even added additional washrooms to cut down on crowding and potential wait times.
Even with all of these restrictions in place, locals are nonetheless sure to be eager to get out and enjoy some public entertainment for the first time in months. Though limits surrounding large gatherings are likely to remain in place for a good while longer, reopening drive-in theatres allows people to access entertainment in a unique way that still allows for proper physical distancing.
