Here are 5 new Hamilton craft beers perfect for summer

The hot weather is here, patios are open, and beer lovers are ready to crack open some world-class cold ones courtesy of Hamilton’s best craft breweries.

Thankfully, Hamilton’s many excellent craft breweries like Fairweather, Grain & Grit, and the O.G. local craft brewery Collective Arts have heard the call for light, refreshing, fruity, and straight-up delicious beer that’s perfect for the warm summer days ahead.

We’ve sampled a bunch of Hamilton’s best summer-ready craft brews – you know, for research purposes – and created a list of five of our favourite local beers that practically scream summer.

Without further ado, here’s our delicious list!

Obscured by Clouds (Dry-Hopped Witbier) – Clifford Brewing Co.

Clifford Brewing Co is easily Hamilton’s most underrated brewery, constantly churning out expertly-crafted takes on old-world and new-world beer styles at their East Hamilton facility.

Obscured by Clouds, a one-off release, is a refreshing, patio-ready, dry-hopped witbier brewed in collaboration with Toronto’s excellent Muddy York Brewing.

Coming in at an easygoing 4.5 per cent ABv, this traditional Belgian-style wheat beer is kicked up a notch with the addition of New Zealand hop varietals like Motueka and Wai-iti, adding some tropical pizazz to the typical witbier notes of fresh orange peel, banana, and balanced spice. Get into it.

Gummy Venus (Fruited Pale Sour) – Fairweather Brewing Company

This fruited pale sour brewed with orange, pineapple, rosemary, and lactose may not be the lightest beer ever, with its considerable 7 per cent ABv.; but this balanced, masterfully crafted sour beer was basically built for an afternoon in the pool.

Gummy Venus sees bright candied citrus and tropical fruits dominate on the palate, with a pleasant herbaceous note from the rosemary and a creaminess imparted by the lactose.

This one goes down dangerously easily, so be sure to take your time with it, sipping the day away slowly and getting the most out of a beer brewed by one of Ontario’s most consistently exceptional breweries.

Mallard Lite (Dry-Hopped Lager) – MERIT Brewing Company x Lewis Mallard

The playfully-named Mallard Lite is a special beer from James North’s famed MERIT Brewing, particularly because it was brewed in collaboration with one of the city’s most endearing icons.

That’s right: Mallard Lite was co-created by none other than Lewis Mallard, a psychedelic folk artist and mysterious unofficial mascot for the city who can regularly be spotted strolling the Hamilton streets in a giant, colourful duck costume.

Lewis himself teamed up with MERIT to create this crushable dry-hopped lager, brewed with Saaz, Mandarina Bavaria, and Huell Melon hops for a ridiculously refreshing beer with some grassy notes and delicate fruitiness. This beer will make you quack with delight.

Free Spirit (Wheat Beer with Strawberry & Banana) – Grain & Brit Beer Co.

Located in West Hamilton mere steps away from Fairweather Brewing, Grain & Grit has become known for its ever-changing line of small-batch beers that are accessible as they are adventurous and fun.

Free Spirit, a fruited wheat beer, exemplifies this. Brewed in a German wheat beer style and with a generous addition of strawberry and banana, this 5 per cent ABv beer is full-bodied and packs a fruity punch while remaining refreshing as heck.

Not a banana fan? Grain & Grit has also brewed a Free Spirit variant fruited with mango instead for a different kind of summery, tropical kick.

Flower & Song (Elderflower Lager) – Collective Arts Brewing x Fairweather Brewing Company

Two titans of Hamilton craft beer have teamed up to brew a light-yet-complex summer crusher of the highest order.

Brewed by Collective Arts in collaboration with Fairweather Brewing, Flower & Song is a 5 per cent ABv lager with elderflower that was brewed especially for Collective Arts’ impressive new Toronto brewpub.

Steeped with fresh elderflower and lightly dry-hopped with Mosaic and Crystal hops, this lager has got some complexity despite its easy-drinking nature, with balanced fruit and floral notes in a light-bodied lager that is sure to become a patio staple through the summer.
