Here’s what being in lockdown means for Hamilton

Though it likely didn’t surprise anyone and some considered it long overdue, the Ford government officially placed Hamilton into the lockdown ‘grey’ zone as COVID-19 cases continue heading in concerning directions locally.

Premier Doug Ford made the announcement on Friday afternoon that Hamilton will move to lockdown starting on Monday at 12:01 am, after weeks of the city sitting in the red zone and teetering on the edge of fuller restrictions.

“Hamilton’s move to the lockdown stage is an unfortunate but necessary measure in order to protect the health and well-being of everyone in our community,” said Hamilton’s Mayor Fred Eisenberger.

“We are experiencing a surge in COVID-19 cases and additional restrictions need to be implemented to help lower the spread of this virus. This was a tough decision made by the province. We must take the steps required to protect our hospitals, long-term care and retirement homes, and every person in this city.”

But what does lockdown actually mean for Hamilton? What’s allowed, what isn’t, what’s closed, what’s open?

Though locals were already strongly discouraged from gathering with others outside of their immediate households over the holidays, lockdown tightens those rules even more.

“No indoor organized public events and social gatherings, except with members of the same households,” reads a release from the city; adding, however, that “individuals who live alone, including seniors, may consider having exclusive, close contact with another household to help reduce the negative impacts of social isolation.”

Organized public events in an outdoor setting will have a limit of 10 people, provided social distancing can be maintained at all times.

Furthermore, restaurants, bars, and other food & drink establishments are required to close their dining rooms and patios completely, limiting themselves strictly to takeout, delivery, drive-thru, and curbside pickup.

In-person retail shopping is forbidden except for curbside pickup and delivery, all personal care services such as spas and hairdressers are closed entirely, and facilities for indoor and outdoor recreation are also closed.

Additionally, Hamilton residents are advised to limit their trips out of the house to essential reasons only – including grocery shopping and medical appointments – and gather more safely with loved ones via virtual means such as FaceTime or Zoom. Locals should also work from home when possible.

Hamilton will remain in lockdown for the next 28 days at least.
