HSR bus service running normally on Thursday after strike action averted

The City of Hamilton and the union representing HSR employees have reached a tentative agreement that prevents a transit strike, which otherwise could have been in effect as of today, affecting the morning commutes of countless Hamiltonians.

The agreement was reached on Wednesday after a meeting between the city and the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 107 (ATU). The details of the deal have not been released to the public.

This is good news for residents who rely on the bus system to get to work and other places around the city.

ATU Local president Eric Tuck said that there were two offers on the table before Wednesday’s negotiations. One offer saw employees receive a two per cent wage increase over four years. The other offer was a 1.8 per cent wage increase as part of a five year deal.

The union that represents HSR bus operators, mechanics and other transit workers would have been in a legal strike position as of 12:01 am on Thursday. In fact, there were already wide calls this week for Hamilton transit users to begin planning alternative travel options in the event.

However, Tuck said that any job action would not have taken place until the new year.
