Individuals and businesses could face a fine for defying emergency orders, says OPP

Ontarians who make the decision to defy emergency orders and break social distancing protocols during the COVID-19 outbreak could end up paying a hefty fine, according to Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

For individuals, the fine could be as much as $1,000 for a violation, while businesses and corporations could be hit with a sizeable fine of up to $500,000.

In the midst of the global outbreak of COVID-19 and attempts to mitigate its spread on municipal, provincial, and federal levels, multiple protocols have been put in place.

These emergency orders including the mandated temporarily closure of all restaurants and event spaces, prohibition of gatherings over 50 people, major travel restrictions, workplace closures, and a push for strict social distancing amongst communities.

While many individuals and businesses have been diligently abiding by protocol, many have not taken these measures as seriously, according to the OPP.

These emergency orders all remain in place until March 31st, but in all likelihood, they could easily be extended well beyond that.
