Kobe Bryant artwork going up on James Street North

One of Hamilton’s most celebrated places for street art will now feature a massive painting of Kobe Bryant

The legendary basketball player, who died suddenly in a tragic helicopter crash on January 26th, will be memorialized in mural artwork on a wall on James Street North.

Redditor bailthesmail originally shared an image of an artist finishing the face of the former LA Lakers shooting guard on the platform at the beginning of the week.

The artwork is being painted on the outside of what remains of the old Tivoli Theatre, which stands near the corner of James North and Wilson Street. Reddit user theninjasquad commented in the post about how much paint will need to be removed before restoring the building, which suggests it’s a popular spot for street artists to leave their mark.

Hamilton has a lot of street art around the city with the memorial of Bryant becoming a must-see. Other popular pieces of street art include the Collective Arts mural, Dr. Disc mural, and the Welcome to Hamilton mural at the MacNab Street pedestrian tunnel.

Although Bryant never visited Hamilton, his life and career undoubtedly impacted countless Hamiltonians. He will be memorialized after the tragic helicopter crash that took the lives of nine people, including his 13-year-old daughter.

Bryant spent his entire career with the Los Angeles Lakers before retiring in 2016. He won many accolades including five NBA championships, 18 All-Star appearances, and 12 appearances in the all defensive team.
