Looks like some of Hamilton’s drivers might need to brush up on the rules of the road.
In some dismaying footage captured through the window from the public gallery at Hamilton City Hall, an astonishing number of drivers were caught motoring straight through a red light at the crosswalk on Main Street and Summers Lane outside of FirstOntario Concert Hall.
The video, shared by Environment Hamilton on social media, was captured on February 10th during the 2020 budget public delegations at City Hall.
View from public gallery @cityofhamilton today during 2020 budget public delegations. Had to literally stop traffic to cross to City Hall earlier. Watch & note – light is red for traffic & this happened over and over this aft. Someone is going to get hurt or worse… #VisionZero pic.twitter.com/QfVoqICjYN

Not only are multiple motorists captured shamelessly running the red light, they’re even shown putting pedestrians in direct danger by attempting to drive through while bodies are trying to cross the road; including one clearly using a walker for assistance.
Given the sheer number of drivers who dared to plow through the red light in this lone recorded instance, it’s hard to deny that this is most likely a regular occurrence at this crosswalk.
“I want to say I am surprised to see this, but it is the norm among some drivers in our city, unfortunately,” said Ward 3 city councillor Nrinder Nann on Twitter.
Nann and other Hamilton city councillors have used this video to draw attention to the urgency and importance of Hamilton’s ‘Vision Zero’ initiative, which endeavours to create safer streets and reduce injuries or fatalities for motorists and pedestrians alike.
As Nann added to her points on Twitter: “I see cars blowing stop signs, speeding, driving through red lights daily. This is why we need to invest in #VisionZero, more transit & stop centring drivers on our streets.”
