Large Hamilton Sign to be Installed by April

The plans to have a large sign installed in front of City Hall were revealed last summer as a project to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary. We now have more information on the specifics of this large-scale installation.

The letters of “HAMILTON” will stand 2.25 metres tall, 20 metres long and 2 metres thick. While the letters will be hollowed out, the perimeter and insides will be lit using LEDs and will change colours depending on the time of year or holiday.

Looking at City Hall from Main Street, the sign will be located on the right side of the court in front of the building (West corner).

The sign, which costs $300,000, was paid for through private donations. The installation is scheduled to be complete by April at the latest.

While the idea of a giant sign beaming a city’s name isn’t necessarily a new thing (Amsterdam and Budapest have been doing it for years), the popularization of it in Ontario certainly began with Toronto’s eponymous sign that was installed for the 2015 Pan Am Games in Nathan Phillips Square.

While some may call it a copycat, the sign will undoubtedly bring lots of attention and with it, continued pride in our own hometown.

Plus, just think of all of those glorious selfies taken inside of a hollowed-out letter.
