McMaster University student tests negative for coronavirus

A self-isolated student at Hamilton’s McMaster University has tested negative for coronavirus disease.

This past Friday, a public statement was issued that an anonymous undergraduate student at McMaster University had responsibly placed himself in self-isolation when he began to develop flu-like symptoms that could be in line with those of the potentially dangerous COVID-09.

The emergence of these symptoms came shortly after the student returned from a reading week trip to Italy, where more than 1,600 cases of the new disease have been confirmed.

While the news means that no confirmed cases of coronavirus have made their way to Hamilton yet, 18 cases across Ontario have been confirmed as of March 1st and, given the global trend of the virus’ rapid spread, Hamilton’s public health officials are taking necessary precautions and preparing the public in the event of an outbreak.

To do your part in avoiding the contraction or spread of COVID-09 and other seasonal illnesses, maintain proper regimented hygiene practices such as thorough hand-washing, avoiding touching your face with bare hands, and staying a minimum of one metre away from anyone in public who is coughing or sneezing.

Though the spread of coronavirus seems rapid and there are some documented fatalities, only 2 per cent of people diagnosed with the disease have died. Most who contract it make a full recovery after experiencing symptoms similar to cold and flu, including fever, coughing & sneezing, fatigue, body aches, and sore throat.

Stay home and consult with a physician if you begin to experience any suspect symptoms.
