McMaster’s rainbow crosswalk has been vandalized

Throughout 2018, Hamilton has witnessed countless cases of vandalism. While many of these instances have been the product of retaliation against alleged gentrification, the most recent case of vandalism is in a class of its own.

Some time in the early hours of the morning, McMaster’s rainbow crosswalk was covered in white paint. The paint was dumped in the centre of the crosswalk and smeared approximately 30 feet up the road toward campus.

Both Hamilton police and McMaster security are aware of the incident and are currently investigating. As more information becomes available, the incident may be investigated as a hate crime.

Located at Sterling Street and Forsyth Avenue, McMaster’s rainbow crosswalk has become very popular with students and residents in the Westdale neighbourhood.

Not only does the crosswalk symbolize pride, but also it relays the message that McMaster is a welcoming and inclusive campus. Let’s keep Hamilton a safe and accepting space for all residents, especially those in the LGBTQ+ community.

Do you think this incident is a hate crime? When do you think the chain of vandalism will stop? Let us know in the comments below.
