Neighbour to Neighbour’s shelves are nearly empty

Hamilton’s food banks are always hit the hardest in the summer. Not only does the demand for goods rise but there is a lack of donations coming in. Often times, places like Neighbour to Neighbour rely on businesses and other institutions to hold donation campaigns – with schools being closed, businesses having reduced hours and families being on vacation, there are simply not enough donations coming in.

While all of Hamilton’s food banks have been affected, Neighbour to Neighbour’s shelves are nearly bare.

Neighbour to Neighbour serves approximately 1,100 Mountain households each month. Currently the food bank is in need of a variety of items, such as canned vegetables, canned fruit, pasta sauce, cereal, oatmeal and infant supplies. Without such staple items, they cannot serve the community as well as they want to.

Thanks to Hamilton’s community gardens, Neighbour to Neighbour is starting to receive fresh produce. While they are able to offer fresh kale, corn, zucchini and cumbers, fresh produce always flies off the shelves.

If you have your own garden and wish to donate vegetables, the food bank is more than happy to take your produce. They would also appreciate any and all non-perishable items, as well as cash donations.

If you have the means to donate – whether it is one, ten, or a hundred items – every little bit helps. Neighbour to Neighbour accepts donations from 9 am to 3:30 pm Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Friday. Thursday donations are accepted between 9 am and 7:30 pm.
