New 25k mountain trail will be built

Two weeks ago, the city proposed building a new trail that will connect most existing trails and parks along the escarpment. The goal of the trail is to better connect Hamilton Mountain, linking the 25-kilometre stretch between Ward 6 and Ward 9. This week, Hamilton city councillors officially green-lit the project.

The starting route of the multi-use trail will begin in Ward 6 and run along the Mountain Brow to Kenilworth Circle and Mohawk Road.

The project includes plans to extend pathways to both Iroquoia Heights Conservation Area and to the Devil’s Punchbowl.

The new mountain trail comes with a hefty price tag. It is estimated that the project will cost at least $9 million and take 20 years to complete.

While the price may be high, the benefits outweigh the cost. As the trail will link to pre-existing parks and other trails, it will make moving from one point to another much easier. Instead of having to leave one trail to drive to another, users can walk the distance if they are physically capable.

The pathways will be wide enough to serve pedestrians, pets and cyclists. Whether you’re taking your dog on a walk, pushing the kids in the stroller or use a mobility device, there’ll be room for everyone.

For those who wish to take a break and just enjoy the scenery, there’ll be plenty of benches installed along the trail.

Will you use the new mountain trail? Let us know in the comments.
