New elementary school being built in upper Stoney Creek

Hamilton is constantly growing. As more homes are built and new residents move in, the city has to keep up and make sure residents of all ages are being served. The city’s latest move to better serve children and provide education is to build a new elementary school in the upper Stoney Creek area.

Construction began last week on the 32,527-square-metre public elementary school. The $14.1 million building, located on Bellagio Avenue, is set to accommodate 625 students.

The school’s doors will open in September 2019.

The upper Stoney Creek area along Rymal Road has seen over a thousand new residences over the past decade. With many young families moving into the area, schools such as Janet Lee and Tapleytown struggle to accommodate the influx of students.

When the new school opens, it will alleviate pressure on the older schools and their teachers.

The new school will feature childcare facilities, 18 general classrooms, dedicated rooms for arts and science, five full-day kindergarten classes, learning commons and a gymnasium with a stage.

Currently the school doesn’t have a name. Public consultation for a name is expected to begin in the new year.

Do you live in the area? What do you think the new school should be named? Let us know in the comments.
