Large cycling investment approved for Hamilton

More of Hamilton will soon be safer and more accessible to cyclists thanks to a $300,000+ investment that was unanimously passed at Hamilton City Council in an effort to continue improving city cycling.

The announcement was made by City of Hamilton Ward 3 councillor Matthew Green on Friday, Aug 17. The $320 thousand investment will see enhancements made to the Delaware, Maplewood and Gage Avenue bike lanes while also extending the Cannon cycle track to Tim Hortons Field.

“This morning I’m introducing $320k in #ProudToBeWard3 investments in cycling and safer Streets,” Green posted on his Twitter page.

From the $320 thousand, Ward 3 is going to see $170 thousand invested into new cycling infrastructure and $150 thousand for new bike share bicycles. There will be new hammer hoop bike racks as well as 75 new bike share bicycles for eight planned new stations across Ward 3.

Community members reached out on social media to thank the councillor for seeking the investment.

“Fantastic news!” said Rachel Weldrick on Twitter. “Thank you [Michael Green] for your ongoing support for cycling in #HamOnt. This is what we need.”

While others mentioned that the ward 3 councillors time could have been better spent focusing on other issues in the city, like minimum wage.

“Not going to keep the minimum wage pilot going then?” tweeted David Marshall. “Rather more important [at the moment] don’t you think. Council should lead on this matter.”
