Ontario is bumping up second doses of COVID-19 vaccines

Looks like Ontarians will be able to get their full COVID-19 vaccination sooner than expected.
After initially launching with an extended 16-week interval between first and second doses due to tenuous supply of doses, the Ontario government is now working to accelerate second doses in line with steady increases in vaccine supply.

The news comes at the province hits a milestone for vaccinations, with over 65 per cent of Ontario adults over the age of 18 having received at least their first doses.
“If there is sufficient vaccine supply, it is anticipated that the majority of Ontario residents who choose to receive the vaccine will be able to be fully vaccinated by the end of summer,” reads a statement from the province.
Beginning on May 31st, Ontario residents aged 80 and over will be eligible to rebook for an earlier second dose appointment, pending appropriate dose supply. Then, the week of June 14th will see that eligible open up to residents 70 and over as well.
From there, in the coming weeks and months, further age groups and priority groups will be eligible to bump up their second doses as well; though, the timing of those earlier scheduled doses may vary dependent on local considerations, vaccine supply, and date of first dose.
Rescheduling second dose appointments will be available through the province’s online booking system as well as through pharmacies.
“Thanks to the efforts of our frontline health care heroes and community partners, our province has reached another exciting milestone of 65 per cent of Ontario adults having received their first dose,” said Deputy Premier and Minister of Health Christine Elliott.
“Accelerating second doses will provide more protection to Ontarians sooner. Every dose administered means we are one step closer to the end of the pandemic, and I encourage all Ontarians to get vaccinated and continue following public health advice.”
