Ontario schools no longer reopening on April 6th

Premier Doug Ford has announced that schools will not be re-opening on April 6th as originally forecasted.

It was first stated on March 12th that all publicly-funded schools were to close for three weeks. Students were essentially given an extended March break with a set return date, but that is no longer looking feasible given the state of emergency declared for the COVID-19 spread. Ford assured the public that “the number one priority right now is making sure our kids are safe.”

This extension is indefinite: at this moment there is no defined date of return, although the provincial government has yet to give up hope for the remainder of the school year.

As the situation changes day-by-day, we may receive an update at any time on recommendations from Education Minister Stephen Lecce and Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Williams.

Thankfully motions are in place to ensure that high school students who are in their final year set to graduate will not be held back due to the disruption in coursework.

Most post-secondary institutions have now switched to online learning. An educational online learning portal was created to support high school and elementary students, although the modules are not necessarily direct expansions of what the students were currently learning in class before school closures.

There have been a multitude of other at-home educational resources shared online to encourage continued education. Broadcasting companies are also lending a hand; TVO will be airing educational shows that teach math, science, and language.
