BREAKING: Ontario orders all non-essential businesses to shut down amid COVID-19

The province of Ontario is officially ordering all non-essential businesses to shut down, in an effort to help mitigate the ongoing spread of COVID-19.

The announcement this afternoon from Premier Doug Ford explained that the order comes into effect on Tuesday March 24th at 11:59 pm, at which point all non-essential businesses and services will be required to shut down for a minimum of two weeks.

“This was a very tough decision but it is the right decision,” said Ford. “This is not the time for half-measures. This decision was not made lightly.”

The announcement will be followed by a list, to be released Tuesday, which will break down which businesses and services are considered non-essential.

This is, however, not necessarily a complete shut-down of all of these businesses; those who are able to carry out operations and work remotely will still be able to do so. In the event some businesses choose not to comply with the order and remain open, the province is exploring possible enforcement measures.

Notably, the announcement comes freshly off of the news that Ontario has confirmed another 78 positive cases of COVID-19, bringing the current provincial total to 503.
