Ontario’s publicly-funded schools will remain closed until at least May 31st

Ontario’s education minister Stephen Lecce announced yesterday that the closure of Ontario publicly funded schools will be extended until at least May 31st.

Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board and Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board will be continuing with phase two of their distance learning program for the next month at least.

The decision to extend the closure was at the advice from the Chief Medical Officer of Health as well as health officials on the COVID-19 Command Table. It’s part of the ongoing effort to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus in the province.

An extension will provide an additional period of time to look at updated modelling and data to make further decisions regarding whether or not school will open again before summer break.

“We will do whatever it takes to keep our students safe,” said Minister Lecce. “The government is taking a careful approach which provides our medical experts the time to review the modelling and make the best decision for the safety of our students and the future of learning.”

Most of Hamilton’s schools closed immediately after March Break in an attempt to get an early start on battling the coronavirus outbreak. Ontario was the first province in the country to announce the temporary closure of all publicly funded schools.

While at home, students and teachers have been adapting to distance learning in order to complete as much of the curriculum as possible for this school year. The province has partnered with Apple and Rogers Communications to ensure all students have access to online learning spaces. As of April 27th, over 20,000 iPads have been sent out to families, and free Rogers wireless data is available to them until the end of June.
