Hamilton has a low COVID-19 mortality rate compared to other Ontario cities

Looks like Hamilton is handling the COVID-19 pandemic pretty well compared to other parts of the province.

Through data continually gathered and analyzed by the Hamilton Spectator, it appears the city is outperforming other Ontario municipalities regarding multiple aspects of how COVID-19 is affecting the community; including a lower mortality rate than most other cities in the province.

In fact, Hamilton is currently sitting in the top half of the best performing Ontario municipalities based on its total confirmed cases by population, mortality rates, hospitalization rates, and ICU admission rates.

Hamilton’s mortality rate is currently 3.2 deaths per 100,000 people, coming in much lower than nearby municipalities such as London at 4.8, Waterloo at 5.2, Toronto at 6.4, and Windsor at 7.9.

In terms of hospitalization, Hamilton’s rate is at 8.6 people per 100,000, which is considerably lower than nearby Toronto at 22.4 and Waterloo at 17.5.

These positive trends indicate that Hamilton is on the right track in its local battle against COVID-19, and shows the impact that current emergency measures – such as social distancing and citywide closures – are having on the city’s efforts to avoid a spike in cases.
