Quidditch championship played at Tim Hortons Field

Brooms up, Hamilton!

This past Easter weekend, Hamilton hosted Quidditch Canada’s 2018 National Championship. The games took place March 31st and April 1st at Tim Horton’s Field, with 17 different teams competing for first place.

Saturday morning brought three rounds of nationals, narrowing down the competition. By the afternoon nine matches were played, but inclement weather meant cancelling the rest of the games until the following day.

The games picked back up at 7:15 Sunday morning. The four semifinalists included Calgary Quidditch Club, Université Montréal Quidditch Club, Valhalla Quidditch, and Guelph Quidditch.

The winners were announced Monday via Quidditch Canada’s twitter. Valhalla won the championship, taking home gold, while Calgary took silver and Guelph took bronze.

What is quidditch anyway? If you grew up reading (or watching) Harry Potter, you’ll be more than familiar with the sport.

If not, quidditch is a sport invented by author J.K. Rowling. In the Harry Potter universe, quidditch is the be all end all sport; think of the biggest sports fanatic you know and multiply their die-hard love for the game by ten.

If you were to compare quidditch to any real life sport, it is a mix between dodge ball, basketball, and baseball. On top of that, quidditch is co-ed, full contact, and played while riding broomsticks.

Quidditch is played between two teams, with whichever team having the most points at the end of the game winning. Your team can consist of 21 players, but only seven players (per team) can be on the quidditch pitch at once: a Keeper, two Beaters, three Chasers, and one Seeker.

To score points, the Chasers and the Keepers must work together in order to pass the quaffle through the opposing team’s set of hoops. The Beaters use bludgers to temporarily knock their opponents out of the game.

The Snitch Runner is released 17 minutes into the match, and the Seeker must ‘catch’ the snitch. The Seeker completes this task by pulling off the small ball that is attached to the back of the Snitch Runner.

Many spectators and players stated that having the game played in a stadium like TIm Hortons Field brought a lot of legitimacy to the sport.

The sport will only get bigger from here!
