Restrictions on short-term rentals are lifted in Ontario starting today

Hamiltonians can start getting their short-term rentals back in action starting today.

The Ontario government announced on Thursday that short-term rentals of cottages, condos, and other sites will be allowed to restart after being closed for two months during the shutdown.

Minister of Economic Development Victor Fedeli made the announcement on his Twitter page stating that all non-essential short-term rentals can resume.

During the lockdown, short-term rentals were only allowed to be rented to people in need of emergency housing under Ontario’s Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act.

Operators of short-term rental properties are encouraged to consult the health and safety guidelines related to the tourism and hospitality sector when considering how to reopen.

The provincial government also says that physical distancing orders should continue to be followed and recommend wearing a face mask while communicating with guests as well as frequently washing the hands.

A spokesperson for the office of the premier told CTV News Toronto that regions concerned with reopening are welcome to implement their own restrictions that could prevent short-term rentals from resuming.

As of June 5th, the City of Hamilton hasn’t announced any of their own restrictions regarding the restart of short-term rentals.

A short-term rental is when guests rent a space for less than 28 days. This includes Airbnbs, which have become a growing market in the Hamilton area.
