Some Hamilton residents can get a free tree for their backyard

If you own a home in Hamilton’s Ward 3, then you might be able to get yourself a free tree to plant in your backyard.

The city has committed to increasing the Urban Tree Canopy from 21 per cent to 30 per cent over the next few years, and one strategy they have is to plant trees on public lands including municipal frontage of homes.

While many homes in Ward 3 do not have the space for a fully grown tree in their front lots, the ward office purchased 200 trees to plant in neighbourhood backyards this year. Right now, Ward 3 is only at 17.9 per cent of their share of the urban canopy.

Those interested in trying to get a free tree can register using this form. They will also receive educational information on how to plant the tree, care for it, and set it up for a long healthy life.

The last day to register is April 16th and residents who were successful in getting a free tree will be contacted with a location for pick-up or an approximate drop-off time with at least one week’s notice.

The City of Hamilton started developing a plan for the Urban Tree Strategy in 2019 and have already made the effort to plant trees across the city.
