Someone tried to break into Antique Avenue on Ottawa Street

Another one!? In a time when numerous business break-ins or vandalisms have occurred in just a few short weeks, yet another Hamilton small business saw an attempted break-in; and the incident has even gone a bit viral.

Beloved Ottawa Street antique shop Antique Avenue shared images of an unidentified figure attempting – in broad daylight, no less – to climb the security gate protecting the shop’s front entrance while it was closed.

The individual appears to be an adult male wearing grey sweatpants, a grey hoodie with a white shirt underneath, and black sneakers with red and white soles. From the looks of the image, the individual was unable to squeeze his body through the narrow gap at the top of the gate.

“When someone attempts to break into your store and can’t quite make it!” said Antique Avenue in a post on Instagram, adding that the store and its owners are completely safe following the incident.

The attempted break-in rapidly found some unexpected social media fame, including a video with over 100,000 views on the immensely popular app TikTok revealing photos that showed pedestrians walking by the incident in action as if nothing was happening.

“People just kept walking by because, to be honest, this is normal for Hamilton,” jokingly remarked TikTok user and city resident Kevin Greenen, who goes by @tattedpolitician on the app.

The joke does have some truth to it, though. In a matter of weeks, numerous Hamilton small businesses like cocktail bar Stardust, vintage store Royal Flush, craft beer bar Mosaic, and tattoo lounge Vagabond Saints have all seen break-ins, vandalisms, or thefts in isolated incidents.
