Sunnyside Grill to replace Phyl’s Family Restaurant

A new location of Sunnyside Grill is opening soon at the corner of Stonechurch and Upper Paradise Road on the Hamilton Mountain, replacing longtime Mountain mainstay Phyl’s Family Restaurant.
Phyl’s was an all-day breakfast joint adored by the people of Hamilton. The ‘greasy spoon’ spirit represented the hard working soul you can expect from a local Hamilton diner.
The restaurant operated two locations simultaneously and at the end of their Upper Paradise lease, the decision was made to shut down the Hamilton location in order to relocate to Niagara Falls to be closer to their children. Luckily, their location in Niagara Falls is still open for those willing to make to trek for that same local diner experience.
Hamiltonians who love their diner breakfasts don’t have to get too bummed out though, because a new spot is about to take its place — Sunnyside Grill.
The franchise has yet to begin promoting the new location on their social media, though their website lists the Hamilton location as “Coming Soon [in] late 2019”.
Although you may be skeptical of a franchise diner replacing an independent family restaurant, you should know that Sunnyside Grill is not your typical diner chain.
Sunnyside Grill was founded in 2004, with the mission to provide the diner experience that many desired, but with high quality ingredients and delicious meals.
The founder of the restaurant named it Sunnyside Grill after his Grandmother Ivy, who used to provide home cooked meals to workers on their way to and from work in her front patio in Treviso, Italy. Soon, the restaurant became a popular hot spot for hungry workers, but stayed true to its roots as a home-cooked dining experience. When her customers were asked where Ivy’s place was, they would reply, “the Sunnyside of the Street.” Since then, the legacy of Ivy has provided Sunnyside’s customers with exceptional meals with home cooked charm.
