Uncle Ray’s Food & Liquor set to open in Hamilton

Heads up, foodies: another massive addition to Hamilton’s food scene is about to open the doors of its new Southern-style kitchen… with a twist.

Uncle Ray’s Food & Liquor has been teasing hungry Hamiltonians ever since construction began in the space neighbouring the new Earth to Table: Bread Bar location at the corner of King and James. Details of the new restaurant venture have been pretty scant thus far, save for the fact that it’s the brainchild of the folks behind beloved restaurants like Union Chicken and Amano.

After getting a sneak peek at the high-ceilinged, open-concept space, we’ve learned just a little more of what to expect from Uncle Ray’s as it readies for its approaching opening.

The ever-changing menu, designed by Chef Michael Angeloni, takes its inspiration from homey and nostalgic Southern cuisine. Diners will find elevated soul food that runs the gamut from champagne-paired fried chicken to collard greens to shrimp & grits, using only the highest quality locally-sourced ingredients for a true taste of the Dirty South right here in Hamilton.

The food will be prepared fresh in an open kitchen that faces out into the spacious dining room. Adjacent to it will be a stacked bar slinging classic cocktails with a Southern twist, as well as selections of VQA wine and local craft beer from breweries like Fairweather and Collective Arts (with a few humbler fermented favourites like Labatt 50 and Budweiser kicking around for that fond taste of nostalgia).

The restaurant will even feature a decked-out downstairs space, dubbed Uncle Ray’s Underground, that will serve as a venue for private events and after-hours adult-oriented fun.

Best of all, local foodies won’t have to wait much longer for their first taste: Uncle Ray’s is gearing up to open and serve up sophisticated Southern comforts as early as December!
