VIDEO: Demolition of old steel mill leaves cloud of debris over Hamilton

An investigation from Ontario’s Ministry of the Environment is underway after Hamilton Specialty Bar, an old steel mill in Hamilton’s North End, was demolished, sending a century’s worth of uncontained steel dust into the surrounding city’s air on Monday.

News of the stunningly irresponsible act broke on social media Monday afternoon, when numerous North End residents shared photos and videos of a massive dust cloud making its way into the neighbourhood air as a result of the demolition at 319 Sherman Avenue North. The airborne debris was visible through large stretches of the city.

According to a report from Global News, a spokesperson for the City of Hamilton confirmed that four demolition permits were issued to the owner of Hamilton Specialty Bar, adding that responsibility should fall on the company’s consulting engineer to oversee the demolition process and ensure it is performed safely and responsibly.

As is clear from the shocking evidence making the rounds on social media, safety and responsibility were certainly not taken into account with Monday’s demolition and the startling aftermath.

The Ministry of the Environment is currently assessing the incident and its potential city impacts.
