Vrancor wants to turn its mid-construction Hamilton condo building into a hotel

Though the project is already well underway in Hamilton, local developer Vrancor Group has made a last-minute decision to turn its mid-construction apartment building into a hotel instead.

The 25-storey high-rise building, located at the corner of Main Street East and Walnut Street South, was originally intended, and approved by the city, as a straight-up condo building for long-term rental occupancies.

However, Vrancor is now opting to create a hotel building of short-term rental units instead; a proposed change which would also involve increasing the building’s height and its number of available units.

The new purpose for the building would be suited to accommodate professionals on short-term stays in Hamilton, including actors, researchers, artists, and more.

The proposed changes to this development project will be put to a vote on March 5th by Hamilton’s committee of adjustment. However, some city councillors already oppose the idea.

“I will stubbornly continue to pursue them to have a change of heart and continue with rental,” said Ward 2 city councillor Jason Farr, citing Hamilton’s need for more long-term rental units, especially in the downtown core.

How do you feel about the proposed changes to this project? Let us know in the comments!
