Superstore giant Walmart has announced their plans to close numerous locations across Canada; including one right here in Hamilton.
Walmart will be closing its enduring location at the corner of Upper Sherman and Mohawk on the Hamilton Mountain, leaving the longstanding County Fair Plaza stretch almost completely vacant save for a remaining Beer Store location.
Walmart is closing their Upper Sherman and Mohawk Road location. Leaves this large suburban plaza with only one tenant – The Beer Store.
This is a prime mid-to-tall building redevelopment location. I'll be watching for a planning application in the coming months.— Joey Coleman (@JoeyColeman) March 15, 2021
The closure comes as Walmart announces its plans for a $500 million investment into upgrading many of its locations across the country, with roughly 60 per cent of Canada’s locations set to see some modernization including upgrades to lighting, paint, signage, and repairs.
The County Fair Plaza location is one of 6 key closures across Canada, including spots in Mississauga, Kitchener, Calgary, Edmonton, and St. John’s; spots that Walmart says are located within areas already well served by other Walmart stores.
Workers at these locations will be offered positions at other nearby Walmart locations. A hard closure date for the location has yet to be set.
