When will teachers and education workers in Hamilton get the COVID-19 vaccine?

The Canadian Teachers’ Federation released a statement this week arguing why they think teachers should be on the COVID-19 vaccine priority list.

Many teachers and education workers are exposed to multiple people in areas where physical distancing is not always possible, said the statement.

They were also arguing that teachers and education workers will be around people who cannot be vaccinated even after many of the shots have been given out.

Students under the age of 16 have not been authorized to receive the vaccine yet. This put teachers and education workers in an area with people who are not immune to COVID-19.

“Given how essential it is that school buildings remain open for all students to learn to the best of their ability and for the economy to recover, and considering the actual working conditions for teachers and education workers, it is imperative that teachers and education workers be prioritized to receive the coronavirus vaccine,” says CTF/FCE President Shelley L. Morse.

The safety of schools has been a hot topic over the course of the coronavirus pandemic. Many schools have poor ventilation and confined areas that make it challenging to remain physically distant.

The Canadian Teachers’ Federation finishes the statement by imploring the provincial and territorial governments to consider teachers and education workers to be on the list after the vulnerable and healthcare sectors.

That said, it’s ultimately up to the provincial leaders to decide how to dish out the COVID-19 vaccine.
