Winners announced for 2023 City of Hamilton Arts Awards

Numerous incredible artists were honoured at Hamilton’s biggest night recognizing the best of the city’s arts scene.

The 2023 City of Hamilton Arts Awards took place on June 8th at the Art Gallery of Hamilton, celebrating nominees and award winners working in a variety of creative disciplines including theatre, visual art, sculpting, design, writing, music, dance, and more.

This year, nine winners were honoured with the Creator Award, including designer Angela DeMontigny, writer Anuja Varghese, comics artist David Collier, dancer and choreographer Deepti Gupta, the Hamilton Youth Steel Orchestra, painter Kareem-Anthony Ferreira, visual artist Nathan Eugene Carson, Open Heart Arts Theatre, and emerging sculptor Sarah Sproule.

There were also four winners of the Arts Champion Award, an honour recognizing outstanding supporters of the arts in Hamilton: Chris Pannell, Helen Graham, Jessica Vinluan, and Luis Pereira.

Finally, this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Judith Sandiford and Ron Weihs: both accomplished artists in their own rights who are best known for running Hamilton’s former Artword Artbar as well as the Artword Theatre in Toronto, Artword Magazine, Artword Gallery, and Artword Press.

The City of Hamilton Arts Award winners are selected by two levels of jurying: one jury to review and rank the long list of nominees and create a short list, and a second jury to select award recipients from that short list.
