A guide to Sew Hungry 2018

We hope your stomachs are rumbling because Sew Hungry is taking over Ottawa Street this Saturday.

The annual restaurant and food truck rally that brings foodies, families, and the entire Hamilton community together returns better than ever — this time closing off the entire stretch of road from cars!

Running from 11 am to 8 pm, it’s a day filled with fun and good eats for all ages.

With Sew Hungry being an all day affair, it’s necessary to plan your day accordingly. This quick and easy guide will help you plan your day to best suit you and your family’s needs.

The Location

Sew Hungry stretches from Main Street East to Barton Street East. The distance is about 1 km, making it a 15-minute walk from end to end at a leisurely pace.

If you’re taking young children, bring the stroller or even a wagon. With all the walking and waiting that is bound to happen, they’re going to tire out sooner than usual.

If you’re lucky, there are a couple of benches for resting located on each block but more likely than not you’ll have to resort to eat while standing or plop yourself down on the curb. I suggest bringing a blanket to sit on to make it more comfortable.

Food Scene

There are going to be over 27 food trucks and 17 restaurants partaking in this year’s Sew Hungry, resulting in an abundance of choices. Sew Hungry’s official website provides an interactive map of where the food trucks will be parked.

Looking to satisfy your sweet tooth? There are all kinds of trucks that are pumping out dessert.

If you’re craving fried dough, look no further. Choco Churro’s is making churros, Festival Fun Food is making funnel cakes, and Tiny Tom’s is making mini donuts!

If you’re looking for something to cool you down, give a smoothie pop from Green Machine Smoothies a whirl or some ice cream from Crazy Cravings.

The Hungarian pastry truck Eva’s Chimneys combines the best of both worlds with ice cream served in a fluffy dough cone!

The savoury food trucks are serving up a variety of flavours, from classic Canadian cuisine to international inspired dishes.

Let your taste buds travel to England with A Salt ‘N Battered’s authentic British fish & chips. Try Indian and Asian street food with The Flyin G’nosh. For Southern food, there’s the Primal Urge Southern Smoke Truck as well as The Dirty South.

Want Canadian comfort food? Gorilla Cheese serves the best grilled cheese sandwiches in all of Ontario. You can also grab a hot dog from Reardon’s Hot Dog & Sausage Cart or a classic poutine from TCS Poutinerie.

If you’re looking for a sit-down meal, there are plenty of Ottawa Street restaurants open for Sew Hungry. The variety of restaurants to choose from is just as vast as the food trucks. From hamburgers to Italian cuisine, Ottawa Street has got it all.

Entertainment

A live music stage will be located at Ottawa Street and Edinburgh Avenue.

This year’s musical guests will include The Handsome Devils, Alfie Smith, The Altobeelays, Karen Thornton, and more.

There’s also a kid’s zone located between Dunsmure Road and Roxborough Avenue. Check in with the Sew Hungry volunteers on Saturday to see what fun activities your kids can do!

A 150-seat beer garden will be open in front of HAMBRGR. Sit back, relax, and enjoy a refreshing beer in between your tasty travels. To enter the beer garden you must be 19+.

Getting There

Sew Hungry is accessible by bus and car.

If taking the Barton Bus (Bus #2), get off at Barton and Ottawa.

If taking the B-Line Express (Bus #10) or King (Bus #1), get off at Main and Ottawa.

There are many municipal parking lots near Sew Hungry with reasonable pricing.

Municipal Car Park 19, located at 1203 Main Street East, begins at $0.50 an hour.

Municipal Car Park 16, located at 53 Balmoral Avenue, begins at $1.00 an hour to a maximum of $4.00.

Car Parks 39C and 39D are located at 299 Balmoral Avenue, costing $0.50 per hour.

If you don’t mind walking, there’ll be plenty of free parking at The Centre on Barton. I recommend stopping in at any of the stores and making a quick purchase to ensure there’s no issues with you staying too long.

Quick Tips

Bring cash! Some food trucks may have the ability to offer debit or credit while others many not. It will make the process of getting your food and getting out of line much faster if you pay with cash.

Bring water! Feel free to indulge in a cold beer or an ice cream to cool you down, but remember to drink water. This is an outdoor event and you’ll want to stay hydrated.

Wear a hat and sunscreen! Again, this is an outdoor event. Saturday is supposed to be warm with sunshine and you don’t need to deal with a sunburn this early into May. Protect your skin with sunscreen and a hat.

Bring an appetite and patience! Sew Hungry is a fun day filled with food and community, but it’s going to be busy. Prepare to eat some incredible food but prepare to wait in line. The other patrons are just as excited as you are and have to wait in line too. Be polite to one another and remember you’re all in this together.

Sew Hungry is an awesome event and we’re fortunate to have a such a well-coordinated food truck rally right in our city. Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and try something new. There’s plenty to see and eat this year, and I hope you have a great time.
