Ancaster wetland relocation debate continues

A project that would have seen a locally significant Ancaster wetland destroyed to make way for a giant warehouse has been postponed due to mounting opposition

The project by Proponent One Properties Real Estate Inc of Toronto would have seen the construction of a 1.3 million square foot warehouse complex before the group requested a deferral on May 6th.

The request was moments before Hamilton Conservation Authority directors were scheduled to hold a formal hearing on the topic.

There were two opposing speakers of the permit registered to speak at the hearing. Also, there were another 60 residents who submitted written objections.

Although the construction of a potential warehouse could bring lots of jobs to the area, a conservation authority staff report says that the city nor authority policies allow wetlands to be moved and require a 30 metre buffer for any development in the area.

One Properties has yet to submit a planning application and noted that a different developer provided a plan that preserved the wetlands.

In a presentation last to authority directors last fall, a lead consultant said that the wetland’s location would make it impossible to build in the area with it being basically like “a hole in a donut.”
