While we still cannot go safely to many public places, especially for extra curriculars such as entertainment and art, a new initiative by the Art Gallery of Hamilton (AGH) is helping bridge that gap.
On June 3rd, the AGH announced the launch of an online collection of over 10,000 pieces of artwork. Founded in 1914, the AGH is the oldest, largest public art gallery in southwestern Ontario and now we can all enjoy it online from the comfort of our homes – for free!
Anyone will be able to search for specific art pieces either by using the search function or by filtering the category or artist. The vast collection can also be narrowed down by keywords, date range, or artist culture. This huge library of artwork is not only going to be appreciated by the general public, but also serves as a valuable resource for researchers, educators, and students.
The large collection includes many pieces beyond the physical artwork that is displayed inside the AGH walls and will be available online indefinitely.
AGH President and CEO Shelly Falconer reports that this collection is “one of Canada’s most significant collections of Canadian, international, and contemporary art” and that “the AGH’s commitment [is] to make our permanent collection more accessible.”
Don’t forget to check out some of their other creative and engaging online content here, including watercolour classes, comic book classes, story time narrations, collection showcases, behind the scenes videos, and more.
