BREAKING: Hamilton’s first case of COVID-19 has been confirmed

According to Hamilton public health, a Burlington resident who works as an oncologist at Hamilton’s Juravinski Hospital has tested positive for COVID-19, marking the city’s first confirmed coronavirus case.

The oncologist, a 32-year-old unidentified female, returned this past Saturday from a trip to Hawaii and started to experience mild symptoms on Monday. She was immediately tested at Juravinski that same day, and is currently in self-isolation at her home in Burlington.

Prior to this, the oncologist had attended work on the afternoon of March 9th, making contact with 14 patients, two physicians, and five other health care workers.

Those who may have come into contact with the oncologist and may be at higher risk have been urged to self-isolate at home, while others considered lower-risk are advised to continue self-monitoring and contact a public health agency in the event of any symptoms.

Health officials are working actively to access any potential risks, while stressing that the risk to the public remains very low.

In any case, the public is encouraged to continue practicing proper preventative measures, including regular and thorough handwashing, coughing and sneezing into the crook of the elbow, and to stay home if you’re sick.

This case marks the first for Hamilton, and the 41st for the province of Ontario as a whole.

The overall public risk for COVID-19 remains very low, with health officials actively monitoring the situation as it develops.
