The closure of all public and private schools in Ontario are set to remain in place even longer than originally ordered, according to a new announcement from the provincial government.
As confirmed cases of the COVID-19 virus continue to rise on a daily basis, with the provincial total reaching nearly 2,000 as of today, Ontario government officials have revealed that elementary and high schools will remain closed until May 4th at the earliest.
NEW: Ontario schools will be shut down until at least May 4. Education Minister @Sflecce will have more details at 1 pm. They have been closed since March 13. #onted #onpoli #COVID19

This is a change from the original announcement, in which the Ontario government said that schools would ordered to shut their doors from March 13th until April 6th.
However, with no clear sign of when Ontario’s coronavirus cases will see a decline, the original date announced is simply too early for business as usual to restart at Ontario’s schools.
Premier Doug Ford and Education Minister Stephen Lecce will be speaking live with reporters at Queen’s Park at 1 pm EST today. The livestream of the conference can be viewed here at that time.
