BREAKING: Ontario sees its largest one-day spike in COVID-19 cases today

In the province’s largest one-day increase since January 15th, Ontario is reporting 564 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Friday alone as testing across the province intensifies.

The new number of confirmed cases today brings the provincial total to 9,525 as of today, Friday April 17th, coming after reports of 514 new cases on Thursday and 494 on Wednesday of this week, indicating an increase in testing and a steady rate of growth for new cases at roughly 6 per cent each day.

These new reported cases also come alongside the announcement of 55 new deaths today alone in Ontario due to COVID-19 complications; again, the largest daily death rate reported so far. That said, almost half of the total reported cases have now recovered.

Notably, these number simply represent the number of cases confirmed via official testing in Ontario; it’s almost certain, too, that the true number of positive cases is larger than what is being reported daily.

If these new numbers are any indication, it seems clear that we’ve not yet reached the provincial peak of the COVID-19 outbreak, and that rules and restrictions in place in Ontario are not likely to be relaxed or lifted any time soon.

More on this as it develops.
