Burlington native Mfiondu Kabengele begins first NBA season

Burlington native Mfiondu Kabengele has begun his first NBA season.

The 6’10, 250-pound forward was drafted to the Brooklyn Nets at 27th overall this past June, but was subsequently traded to the Los Angeles Clippers. He got his first game action last night in Los Angeles’ second game of the season. He played four minutes, had one rebound, one block, and scored his first NBA basket to earn the first three points of what will hopefully be a long, productive career.

Kabengele was born in Burlington, where he established himself as a top player in the region but didn’t garner a lot of recruitment buzz from D1 NCAA teams. After he finished high school at Corpus Christi, he played a year at Don Bosco Prep in Indiana and quickly blossomed into a highly sought after recruit, with numerous offers from some of the top programs in the country. He played two seasons at Florida State before being drafted in this year’s first round.

Known as a late bloomer with high potential, strong work ethic, high maturity, and unwavering self-belief, Mfiondu Kabengele is a player that the Clippers hope can turn into a key contributor for them over the next few years. His biggest strengths are his athleticism, strength, defense, and improving skill level.

While he is unlikely to get many minutes during his rookie campaign this year, but will gain invaluable experience just by soaking in the process. He shares a locker room with veteran stars such as Paul George and Kawhi Leonard, who he will undoubtedly learn a lot from.
