Burlington Street East named worst road in Ontario

Over the last month, Hamilton has taken home some impressive winning titles including the Hamilton Bulldogs becoming the 2018 OHL Champions — an incredible feat for a team formed just 3 years ago. Continuing Hamilton’s winning streak, it was announced this Monday that Burlington Street East had won the title of being the worst road in the entire province. *womp womp*

Each year, the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) lets members vote on the worst roads in their city. The voting is broken down by city and region, and at the end of voting a top ten list across all of Ontario is created. Of the over 3500 roads nominated, Burlington Street East has taken the top spot for the last two years.

Burlington Street East first appeared on the CAA’s list in 2009. The street has climbed in placement each year until reaching number one in 2017 and securing this year with another #1 ranking.

One of the largest problems cited by voters is Burlington Street East’s pothole problem. This year alone, Hamilton broke its annual pothole complaint record before the end of February. Other factors involved in being dubbed the worst road in the province include cracks in the road and crumbling asphalt.

Repairs can be made to the road, but it’s uncertain if there can ever be long lasting results. Let’s not forget that Burlington Street used to be called Industrial Road — plenty of transport trucks still drive along the street. With the weight of those vehicles and the road’s constant use, upkeep has proven to be difficult.

For the Hamilton region specifically, the report ranks the following as the city’s 5 worst roads:

1. Burlington Street East
2. Barton Street East
3. Main Street West
4. Nikola Tesla Boulevard
5. Scenic Drive

Over the next year, we are hopeful to see some changes to Burlington Street East. Let’s hope Hamilton doesn’t take home the title for the third year in a row.

What do you think about the state of Burlington Street East? What changes do you propose to make the road better? Let us know in the comments.
