Canada Post workers to strike Monday

If you’re expecting a package in the mail, get ready to wait a little longer than anticipated. On Tuesday, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) announced that nearly 50,000 Canada Post employees are ready to strike if their basic needs aren’t met.

The CUPW has given notice to Canada Post that a strike will begin next week if a deal with its Urban Postal Operations, Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers can’t be met.

According to the CUPW, Canada Post has failed to address major issues that concern their employees. Some of these issues include health and safety, gender equality and the preservation of full-time, middle class jobs.

While the CUPW still wishes to negotiate settlements without postal disruption, the union is ready to start striking as early as midnight on Monday, October 22. Locations of these strikes have yet to be determined.

Thousands of Hamiltonians rely on Canada’s postal service. Whether someone is sending snail mail, shipping a package to a loved one or receiving medical supplies, Canada Post plays an integral role in day-to-day life.

While we don’t want to see people affected by a strike, we do believe that all Canadians deserve jobs where their voices are heard and their needs are respected and met.

How often do you use Canada post? Do you think Monday’s strike will happen? Let us know in the comments.
