City Housing Hamilton makes plans for seniors’ social housing

This year, Hamilton has made great strides to combat the city’s housing crisis. With the city’s aging population, many of Hamilton’s seniors are finding it hard to keep up with rising rent costs. For several residents, their pension does not leave much wiggle room; affording bills, leisure activities and other expenses is proving to become too much. To create more reasonably priced accommodations for seniors, City Housing Hamilton is planning to build a brand new complex on Upper Sherman.

The $15 million, 65-unit apartment is intended to be built next to the existing social housing buildings just off of Macassa Avenue.

The planning of this project is still in its early stages. The plans, including the height and style of the new building, are projected to be completed by the end of 2019.

The existing social housing buildings in the area will also get a makeover. City Housing Hamilton has yet to decide whether the buildings will be renovated or torn down and replaced by new apartments.

City Housing Hamilton is looking to residents to get input on their new project. In particular, they need help deciding on both the new building’s design and what should be done with the old buildings.

Both the new and existing buildings offer a mix of subsidized and market rental units. This mix ensures that all Hamilton seniors are able to find a place to call home.

What do you think about the new senior social housing plan? Let us know in the comments.
