City of Hamilton releases update on Sam Lawrence Park design plan

The City of Hamilton has provided an update on the state of the Sam Lawrence Park improvements, this time with some decisions on site wide improvements.

Previously, the City had released three new design concepts to outline the potential changes for the park and asked Hamiltonians to vote using a survey. These three concepts offered several interesting upgrades, including a pedestrian bridge that went over the Jolley Cut to give direct access into the heart of the park.

Some other proposed improvements included an observation deck on the west side, a new ampitheatre, and a children’s play area.

Since then, the city has received feedback from their survey and discovered some of the core things that Hamiltonians believe should be added to the park regardless of the design concept chosen.

These improvements include repairs for things like roads, walls, and trails, and quality of life improvements through the addition of things such as new plant life and seating.

All design concepts also feature an update to the Arkledun Avenue and Bruce Trail access. This update will come in the form of a new trail head that creates a “sense of arrival” at the entrance, as well as improvements to the trail that will fix issues with drainage and improve views.

Finally, there has been funding allocated to Sam Lawrence park for a small piece of public art, which the city intends to use as an opportunity to support its Urban Indigenous initiative.

The city also reminds the people of Hamilton that there is still a ‘cost of doing nothing’. If they do not address the issues head on and repair them accordingly, then the costs of maintenance will increase and cause more issues long term.

With this in mind, the city is continuing to ask for our feedback. You can take their short survey here and find all the details about the Sam Lawrence park improvements.
