Condo development on Queenston stirs up controversy

Hamilton has fallen victim to the urban sprawl. New townhouses and two-storey developments are littered across the city, and there’s no telling when Hamilton will officially run out of space. To combat this sprawl, contractors have started building upwards instead of outwards.

While new condos in the city have been generally well-received, Hamilton’s latest development on Queenston Road has been stirring up some controversy. In the eyes of many Stoney Creek residents, a 14-storey building is just too tall.

The proposed condo could stand at 928 Queeston Road at Lake Avenue Drive. If built, the condo will have 160 units, 173 parking spots and commercial spaces on the ground floor.

Most condominium developments in Stoney Creek only reach about seven-storeys high. The tallest development to be approved in the area is eight-storeys tall and will replace the former Bowlerama.

One Stoney Creek resident claims to be opposed to the new condo development because the height of the building will eliminate her privacy. She also cited concerns of increased traffic within the neighbourhood.

Other residents have stepped forward, sharing that the creation of this condo might lead to future highrise developments in the area.

What do you think about high rises coming to Stoney Creek? Are you for or against the development of more condos throughout Hamilton? Let us know in the comments.
