Film industry looks to grow in Hamilton

Hamilton’s creative arts industry is constantly growing. Various artists, whether they are musicians, painters, filmmakers or any other creative medium, come to Hamilton to showcase, celebrate and work on their craft. The city plans to help Hamilton’s influence in the film industry grow by constructing a film production hub near the west harbour.

The proposed building site is located at Tiffany and Barton Street – the 16-acre block has sat vacant for nearly a decade.

Prior to the 2015 Pan Am Games, the city bought the land for what was supposed to become the West Harbour football stadium. As the stadium plans never came to fruition, the land has had no purpose.

When film production companies visited Hamilton back in June and showed interest in the vacant space, the city agreed that it would be perfect place for production.

There’s a high demand for film studios right now, especially across Canada. Many American production companies film in Canada for our landscapes, lower costs and the international subsidies available from the Federal Government. For many American companies, filming in Canada is a win-win situation.

A studio setting up shop in Hamilton would do wonders for our economy. Upwards of a hundred Hamiltonians could be employed for each production, depending on the size of the creations.

While Hamilton is already on the cinematic map thanks to productions like The Handmaid’s Tale and Shape of Water, a local studio could really make the city much more prominent.
