Cootes trail to close temporarily

The public trail beside Spencer Creek near Cootes Drive will be closed for the last two weeks of August. The closure, beginning August 20, will allow heavy construction equipment to access Spencer Creek as part of a $185,000 effort to create better spawning areas for fish.

R&M Construction will do the work, adding pools, rapids, clusters of boulders and overhanging brush. To provide fish refuge from the sun and predators, they will also embed boxlike wooden lunkers into the creek.

The project will cover three sections of the creek east of Thorpe Street. The upper portion by Thorpe will host a salmon habitat, the middle will be for walleye and the lower area closest to Cootes Drive will be for pike and other fish.

The Spencer Creek project has been timed to avoid spawning seasons. The project will contribute to the remediation of Hamilton Harbour through giving fish the necessary habitat to rebound.

Spencer Creek’s restoration is being made possible through a $130,000 grant provided by a special provincial fund to clean up Lake Ontario.
