Demolition of Cardinal Heights School stalled

Earlier this week, demolition work began on the former Cardinal Heights Elementary School. Within a day of starting, demolition crews were halted – no demolition permit had actually been issued.

On Wednesday, the property owners were given a notice to comply for demolition without a permit. It hasn’t been said when demolition will resume.

Cardinal Heights Elementary School closed its doors in March 2017. In May 2017, the property was circulated to preferred agencies; after 180 days of no interest, trustees put the property up for public sale.

The 4.3 acre property was sold to the Cardinal Heights Development Corporation back in June. The property went for $5.25 million.

The money earned through this sale will be added to the $100 million the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board has set aside for current schools. The money will go toward renovations like revitalizing science labs, libraries, gymnasiums and outdoor fields.

What kind of school renovations would you like to see? Let us know in the comments.
